We are a local, independent charity supporting people with sight loss throughout the County. We were established in 1918 and celebrated our 90th Anniversary during 2008.

We do not receive any fixed central or local government funding and rely entirely on a combination of voluntary donations, membership fees, grants we are able to obtain and income from our transcription services.

Our general Service Provision Policy is to provide practical help and assistance for anyone suffering from sight loss, which enables those people to maintain full, healthy, independent and socially active lives for as long as possible, notwithstanding the impact of their sight loss.

We are always looking for new and innovative ways to deliver our services to help ensure that our services are accessible as possible. Our main emphasis is to provide help and support directly into the community rather than expecting service users to come to us.

We currently have a core staff of twelve (mix of full time and part time) and are supported by almost 400 volunteers – a fantastic endorsement, we think, that the public of Dorset recognise the importance of the work we do and want to help and support that.
